Map your start or transition into the sneaker industry
Finding a job in the sneaker business can seem daunting. Search for “sneaker jobs” on LinkedIn and you’ll see hundreds (often thousands) of results. Most job search tools will show you even more.
IS THE TOP COLLECTION OF SNEAKER INDUSTRY EXPERTS READY TO HELP YOU LAUNCH YOUR CAREER IN SNEAKERS.
If you’re interested in building your sneaker career, here are some tips on how to hone in on the best sneaker jobs available:
1. Take your passion for sneakers and match it up against your skillset.
What hard skills do you count as strengths? What soft skills separate you from the pack? If you can navigate social media tools like few others (hard skill) and you are a natural writer or communicator (soft skill), narrow your sneaker employment search to jobs in the industry where communications is a focus. If you have an eye for design or are more of a “maker,” bend your focus towards the creative end of the sneaker jobs spectrum. You should strive to match your passion for sneakers with something you really enjoy doing.
2. Find a sneaker mentor.
Connecting with someone who is working in the industry you aspire to join is perhaps the most powerful companion when traveling your career path. At Sneaker School, we believe in the power of mentorship so strongly that we established a mentor program. Having a resource with knowledge of the sneaker industry can help you find “hidden” sneaker jobs that aren’t listed and sort through the hundreds of positions that are public.
3. Follow the sneaker industry.
It’s likely you already follow sneaker trends pretty closely. Try to find resources that give insight into the industry itself. Sneaker School partner Complex does a great job capturing the sneaker culture and industry, so that’s a good start. Regardless of your sources, staying current on the industry can help you cultivate potential jobs and spot opportunities in the industry that you could turn into your own advantage.
Employment in the sneaker industry can be a tricky process to navigate, as are most efforts to break into a particular industry. With our Sneaker Essentials certificate program, our primary focus is making sure our students have the tools, insight and understanding to get that first sneaker job. And the second.
